I found that image this week in an old magazine I bought for my bookshop. It is in "Cahiers du Cinéma", no 113, November 1960, and the writing is mostly about the film Psycho.
I love Psycho, but my favorite Hithcock is Rear Window, for many reasons, but of course the fact that Jimmy Stuart is playing the role of a photographer... So, when I found that picture, I was on a "whoaaaaaaa"...
Ok, we have to admit that we photographers are all a little bit of a voyeur... And in that film, Stuart is using his HUGE telephoto lens for the purpose of watching his neighbor (note the famous Raymond Burr we see in the reflection of the lens), but he has a very good excuse, he believes the man just killed his wife... But even with an excuse, the motivations he has are still there, he take a great pleasure looking at what his neighbors are doing, from that rear window. That's one of the things I like in that film, and you see it on that pic, Hitchcock is showing to us a man that obviously is having a great pleasure, and a great excitement, in is act of voyeurism.
And now, the translation of the french text below the pic: "In Rear Window, the telephoto lens symbolize the "intellectual world" witch is a link between the "everyday world" and the "desire world".
WoW thanks Clo.
Sorry but I have to say that I have known and dated a few photographers that were tremendous assholes.
Some of the most egocentric, self -centered people I've ever met.
I'd have to say in some cases the size of their lens made up for things missing in "other areas".
In the case of Jimmy Stuart's character he at least has the excuse of being disabled and trapped in his own very small world.
No one like that here of course! Love you all! <3
LOL Jo! Looking at the size of the lens in that way is really funny... must do a very interresting doctoral thesis...
Yes, I forgot to mention that about Stuart's character. In fact, he is full of excuses!... so we just can't blame him for doing those.
There is also an interresting relation between the two couples: Burr, the man maried for a while, who may have killed his wife, and Stuart, the man who's going to marry the lovely, incredibly rich and beautiful, so aristocratic, and so perfect Grace Kelly!
One of my fav scene: she's going to pass the night at the apartment with Stuart (woaaaaah) and to show him she can travel with less, she had brought a tiny wallet. And when she opens it to show what there is in that, a fluffy pink nightgown burst out of the wallet!
haha!!!I just read your comment after posting mine ( being the egocentric asshole that I am).
I literally laughed my ass off!
I forgot about smokin' Grace Kelly! Jesus!
I think Jimmy's hot too. My mom thought I was cracked on that one . Cracked meaning - crazy like a broken egg.
Tall, quiet, mysterious typess ohhhh!
So excited I made two ss that I'll let stand. *<(;-) better not have a cocktail I'm already giddy!
Jozee,
We dated?
You're funny, you big ass! I mean that in the kindest way of course. lol
