Looks nice in flight. We have those here. What ugly birds they are!
Turkey vulture? Is that a vulture you eat for Christmas? Never heard of that kind of bird.... Seems BIG!
Ugly featherless red heads - turkey vultures.
Here's a link to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology page on turkey vultures. Adults are large, with a wingspan of 170cm (5' 7") or more. You wouldn't want to eat one, though.
Their heads are bald so the rotting flesh doesn't stick to them when they feed on carrion. They cool themselves by peeing down their legs. But they are so graceful in the air...
I think it looks very pretty here flying, wings spread.
Cool site Gary! Thanks!
Thanks Gary! But they don't look so ugly.... :)
Somehow that photo made the turkey vulture look better than it does in real life. If you saw one in person I think you might change your mind. maybe it's just me though.
I generally like birds too.
Part of the chain of life, we need them whether they're pretty or not.
I have seen them up close. Here they are waiting for us on Isla Margarita, Venezuela. Closer to home is the Mountsberg Conservation Area, where the Raptor Center treats and houses injured birds of prey that can not return to the wild.
I feel I've seen turkey vultures up close, they're common here.
Gary, you are right about their soaring skills they are beautiful.
I know I've seen black vultures on the ground in Florida. They are creepy birds. I was snooping around an old foundation when I came upon a flock of them on the ground. I will never forget the way they looked at me it was so unsettling.
Like I was the next course!
To each their own. I prefer Great Blue Herons myself.
Swoop, Swoop, Swoop.
Jozee: Yes, black vultures are a different matter entirely ;-)
Sounds like you prefer these photos.
Heron... yes we have it here... But no vulture! There's NO vulture outside. Must be too cold for them. Or maybe we are not good enough for them... Mwhahahahaha! They prefer people from the South! And MacDo.... ;o)
Yes, I liked those photos.
I'm sorry to refute my sister, but I heard that since 3 or 4 years, there is vulture now here, mostly on the big roads. (C'est Louise qui m'a dit cela, elle le tient de son fils Jean-Étienne, il paraît qu'on peut en voir à l'occasion sur la 20!) I was explaining to my sis that it's a friend of ours that said that to me.
I don't know what kind of vulture though...
