Is that a Blue Starfish? They do nasty things to coral reefs.

Those are elf houses on a tree stump. They don't do much of anything. Except collect rainwater that drowns bugs. See them better here. Don't worry I'm getting a Canon soon. I won't stop oversaturating and distorting though. LOL.

@ Heather, the sort of fairy one might see under this house.

I've had more fun Googling Cicely Mary Barker in the last couple days. Another nice link.

Thinkin' about this one.

yes! short of digital slr's [i don't think this is one, is it? though it offers all of the manual settings] which are obscenely priced, this seems to be the best option. i really look forward to your work\play with the new digi eye.

It has other lenses available. I do believe this is an slr- no? At any rate it's not completely decided yet. I like working with my limitations. Don't want so much camera that I'm intimidated.

not sure. gary? calvin? clo? someone? we need help!

i must admit that when i went to 'henry's' to ask about fixing my camera, i held this exact canon in my hands for a moment. i could never afford such a thing, but i liked holding it nonetheless. perhaps this is what many people feel as they sit behind the wheel of a mustang..

It's not a true SLR the viewfinder is just a smaller LCD.
Not interchangable lens - you can put accessory lenses onto the main lens.
The Image Stabilized Zoom is a nice feature.
the 36-400+mm lens is fairly fast and presents a good range of focal lengths.
Shutter speed range is good.

Cost being the deciding factor (as always) It looks like a good general purpose camera
The Powershot S2 IS is 5MP (1 MP less) and all the same features for $100 less.

The S3 IS is not a SLR. No interchangeable lens on that one. The Canon Digital SLR is here. Be careful, I almost had an orgasm looking at this! (or should I say a photorgasm?) :O)

But I believe that the S3 IS, with is 12X zoom, and his great macro is really a great choice!

Oh, and Jo, those fairies are just sooooooooooooo cuuuuuuuuuuuuute! I love them!

Christopher, I know what you mean.
I was handling Canon's EOS-1Ds Mark II
16.7 MP dream the other day in the store and thinking Lamborghini.

I'll never have it - well not until it's the bottom of the line and cameras are rated in GigaPixels.

16.7 mp blows my camera right out of the water and down the street a million miles. I can't even imagine what that's like.

Thanks for your input guys. Your info is invaluable. Had no idea there was such a thing as mountable lenses for non slrs.
My camera is to be a gift. $1000. or under is my budget. Know I want a Canon. Is there a step below the Rebel I should consider?
My BF wanted to buy me this 10 megapixel Sony.

Mp pointed out that storage for pics of such a large size could be problematic. Also this is not an slr either. Not to mention Sony not getting the best rep.

Wouldn't that be the case with the "Lamborghini" as well? I know the prints would be fantastic but other than being able to print wallpaper size photos what are the advantages?

Please don't think me a brat for having this opportunity. Till now my cams have been throwaways,a 35 mm drugstore Minolta and my cell.

Want to make an educated decision and am not hell bent on spending the whole budget. Have been thinking about this for months.

Clo, Thank you for the tutorial.Which model Canon is that? Ginnie has the S3 IS cam. That's what made me think off it.
Glad you liked the fairies. I love Cicely Mary Barker.

Jozee: I would say your choices in the Canon range are the S3 IS or the Digital Rebel XT. The latter may be just above your price range, but it's a true SLR with plenty of opportunity for future expansion.

Does the S3 feel good to you? Do its controls make sense? If you don't like the feel or can't work it easily, then it isn't the camera for you.

As for megapixels -- once you're above 6 or so, you have enough for excellent prints up to 11x14". But the SLR's pixels really are bigger and better. [Insert technical explanation about physics, optics and electronics here.]

CSB: I sat behind the wheel of a Mustang a couple of years ago. Mommie Coolest and I drove it along the Redneck Riviera from NOLA to Apalachicola and then to Atlanta via Tallahassee. Didn't like it -- lots of vroom, but terrible sight lines. (And it only costs as much as my VW Golf.)

Thank you Gary. All this camtalk has fried my third cell cam. Off to Verizon tonight. Oh joy.

Mustangs are kinda like Marlboro Men .
Nice to look at but nothing special. It's just an icon.

I <3 my Honda.
