unsettling news.

first bit of unsettling news: it seems that quite unexpectedly, without any juggling or use of it to prop open the window, i say, it seems that my camera is no longer functional. it will not turn on. its eyelid stays shut despite my poking its bellybutton with my finger.

second bit of unsettling news: the above photo is the last shot that will have been taken by this camera.
not exactly Man Ray..heh.
[for the curious, i did snap this shot because i found something interesting about a puppet who sang:

"left or right
up or down
i have the power to
decide"

yes. a libertarian puppet.
the idea itself made this fellow [that is, me] giggle.

a libertarian puppet who cursed my digi eye with his creepy danse macabre]

It would cost too much to be fixed. it wouldn't be worth it. that money would be better spent invested in another digi eye. Although..i don't really have the money for that. i am recharging batteries [though i am fairly certain this is not it] and trying that. and i am trying to find out if there is some secret reset button combo. you know, like up up down down left right B A start? [ok, about 3 nes fans will know what i'm talking about..]. so yes, we shall see if all is not lost. it actually turns on momentarily, the light, that is; but there is no action in the lens and then it quickly shuts off again.

Hopefully it is your batteries. Yes, I agree that buying a new camera would be the better choice, if it is broken. Did you call the company yet? They might be of some help if it's not the batteries. don't give up! We need your photos!!!

PS~ My hubby be on the playstation right now. What a video game junkie. That's for your right left A B start comment. How about square, circle, X, and triangle? HA!

heather, i purchased the camera used, like any poor university student should! so calling the company will result in a ha hah. or more likely, a 'sorry, we cannot help you'. i might get a quote from a repair shop and if it is below 50 rupees, which is unlikely, then i would proceed that way.

oh man! they've switched to squares and circles, now, haven't they! no wonder my much much much younger nephews are making me look so bad when we hook up their playstation.

for anyone who might be of help to this poor poor boy, here is the info:

sony cybershot dsc w5.
problem: pressing power causes green led to momentarily light up, then turn off again. in that moment there is no action in lens or screen. is there a way to reset it?

Even if it is used, you could still contact Sony. I buy used all the time(we are military...i.e. poor!). And, usually there is tech support that could help locate the problem, or at least tell you there is no way in hell your camera will ever work again.
kidding.

The info I get so far is "change the batteries". Have you done that?

I can go through this trouble shooting with ya.

Also, it says if you have an ac adapter to try that.

The only advice I can offer is trying Alkaline Batteries (rule out bad batteries), remove the memory stick (if you have one), start with the mode dial in different positions.

Outside of that, it would be a blown circuit board, internal fuse (a wire on a circuit board), or dirty/broken sensor. All of which will require a trip to Sony.

Heather posted twice while I was looking up Sonys info.
You're probably going to need functioning batteries even if you have an adapter, Alkalines will work just fine.

no ac adaptor to use.
alkalines were in it when it stopped being functional. i had taken a photo (this photo) using the alkalines and transferred this photo shortly thereafter. i brought it to a pool hall 2 hours later and when i went to turn it on, it rejected me. the batteries were fine, i'm fairly sure. i'm recharging the rechargables though to be sure.

i fear there is not much more troubleshooting to do, heather!
step 4: pick up hammer..
heather, you are so kind for researching. she researched!

have tried the dial in different positions, paul. and i have removed the memory stick. es muerto, pienso... un luz poco y verde por tres secundos..y...entonces...nada.

i will call the sony number you discovered, paul. many thanks for your efforts, too.

Completely replace the batteries with brand spanking new ones. You did that? Sometimes, I have found, the rechargables become all charged out. No more life left in them.

I'm inclined to agree Steven 3 seconds would indicate that it might be failing a self test at the board level.
But clean fresh batteries will tell.
I agree if the rechargables were working before you put in the alkalines then maybe they are a good test.
Sometimes a walking at a coperate repair center (which is what I gave you) can do wonders, even if it were one of the first ones made - it would only be about a month and a half out of warranty.

I don't know how companies are these days, but when I was in Europe, dropping by the Mfg. was my first option on photo gear, and they usually repaired no charge, no questions.
But that was 25 years ago, it's a different world now and I was dealing with Canon.

batteries of every sort, good ones, have been tried. nada! i shall call the number you provided, paul, and try other routes. sony is not good about repairs. this i know. very costly and usually not worth it. i shall never buy another sony. though i swear i so very much enjoyed this camera. we were one and i slept with it. that sounded creepy. but it is true.

paul, i think Canons are the ideal camera to have for repairs and replacing of parts. and i certainly do not anticipate such treatment as you have received. a little research and i have discovered the cost may be 200 dollars. absurd that i would pay for this knowing the very same thing might occur again. i think i'm done with sony, but i shall need to confirm it is indeed dead tomorrow.

i do appreciate your effort and care, both of you.

anyone out there selling a decent digital camera? seriously.

I had a kodak digital that pooped out on me a few months ago, so I know what you are going through, and it sucks.
Then, I got the one I have now, well, don't have now, as Randy's freakin' parents are procrastinators, and have NOT sent me my camera back yet!

Sony's support site for that camera is here.

They recommend that you remove the batteries, wait at least 15 seconds, reinstall the batteries, and turn it on again.

thank you, gary. i have attempted all troubleshooting routines and have called sony. the camera is dead and the repair would likely cost 400$ as the fellow did suggest. 50$ for the quote [which i did not and will not pay]. the camera was purchased for 300$ with tax, so this is not an option for me. i would much prefer another camera. again, i loved this camera, but i shall never buy sony again. no camera should just die internally for no apparent reason.
seriously, if anyone has recently upgraded and wishes to sell [gary?] the old one i'm looking.

Sorry to hear it Chris.
I'm kinda slim on spare digitals, the 300D is just shy of a year old and has to last until it croaks.
Anthing else I have is 1.3mp (Sony Mavica floppy) or less resolution.

On the plus side (there isn't one really) $300 buys lot more camera than it did a year ago.

agreed. i am great at buying a lot for very little. i will likely upgrade for less money.

Cris said it powers off after 3 seconds, he would have to be pretty fast at taking the picture.
