What is Gam doing? Does a turtle hibernate?

Thanks Kimberly, he is quite a colorful fella.
Good question merlinprincesse. Normally this kind (eastern painted turtle) does, but I supply a heating device and two lights--one which mimics the sun's UV rays and one which mimics heat--both necessary for Gam's survival in captivity. In the photo he was just waking up as I was to take this shot. Like most aquatic turtles, he likes to take refuge in a hidden place to sleep, such as this artificial log, sold especially for turtles. He loves sitting on top, swimming inside, and just sleeping in there. In the wild though, at this time of year, Gam would be partially submerged in mud and water in a creek or pond, his heart rate rapidly decreased in a hibernation state. His kind can last longer than any other turtle as far as surviving without air under water or in frozen conditions. They'te incredible and very complex little beings.

Me too Heather--prettey much every morning for me!
