ewww I havent had to deal with the "take over" yet but this ad you have shown us is reall cute!
I have mixed feelings about it, myself. I'm not too happy that I have to revise all my style sheets if I want to use the new templates. I'm keeping my old ones for now, until I can read up on the new classes.
But I do like the "labels" feature. And the fact that I don't have to republish my entire blog if I make a change to the template or settings.
Here in Canada I haven't noticed that the performance is any worse than the old Blogger. Outside North America, your mileage may vary.
Yes, I was forced to change yesterday as well. Like Gary I haven't really experienced any problems. Publishing is so much quicker!
It's funny that the service varies from place to place, hopefully things improve soon on your end Henri.
They'll be offering 'blogger PRO' or some such soon... For a nominal fee of coarse. Then they'll put adverts on them. That bastard bill gates! ummmmmm no. Who ever the google bill gates is!!!
Well, at least they haven't made it as dumb as myspace.
Actually, Google's business model has been consistent. Their revenue mostly comes from the ads they sell, not the applications themselves. In this way, they are similar to traditional print or broadcast media.
They offer useful software for free (e.g. Blogger, Google Maps, Google Docs) and hang ads on the web interfaces. You can already get ads on your blog through the AdSense program, and you get a small return for every click.
There are fee-based versions of the Google search engine, Google Maps and Google Earth, but the customers for these are mostly for-profit businesses.
If you want to pay for the privilege of blogging, why not check out Typepad, Wordpress, etc.
I already have a Typepad account, Flickr,Aminus3,Shutterchance and now JPG thanks to Thom.
Blogger's still my home base for now.
I've been a member since way back in the days of Pyra. I don't recall the takeover being hostile I remember that it was quite amicable and badly needed - Pyra blogger was down more than it was up and was all but useless.
Ad's were the norm and required and a paid account was a waste of money.
Google added the image uploading that we at web-pix enjoy and the abundance of storage space that google brought made that possible.
The latest moves have caused us all grief (enough that I've made plans to leave or rather go back to what I did back the bad old days of unreliable pyra).
google did however make a change that caused me to move my photoblog account to the new blogger, they allowed me to keep my old style customized template.
When blogger first rolled out what they called this beta blogger *generation 3 they didn't allow the old blogger templates.
Charge me for it? I don't think they will but the fact that they make more revenue from ads on a service they don't own (crappy myspace) than they do on a competing service that they do own, blogger is certainly a reason for change.
i fart in their general direction
It's terrible. I'm not too happy about redoing all of my stuff either.
I'm gonna have to see how it all works out before I can get a judgement, but I do hear some good/bad things about the new blogger...
