For those who have difficulties looking at the image or finding it pretty, i would ask them to consider just what part they play, if any, in the process of which this image serves as documentation. Similarly, those who approve of the war in iraq should have a looksee at the images of even a few of the tens of thousands of innocent iraqi civilians whose bodies and heads have been blown open and distorted by American Bullets.
Very true CSB. Sometime you just have to put it into perspective. And to Donald, a very thought provoking shot (or series of them if you include the one before).
This is very interesting and I'm glad to see people engaging in debate, though hopefully not hurting anyone's feelings. I'm no stranger to seeing this kind of thing and I'm glad web-pix is full of a variety of photographic perspectives. Seeing this kind of thing is what made me go vegetarian years ago. It's no lie that the meat industry treats animals with little compassion, torturing them and placing them into lives of misery. I think it's sad and utterly insensitive to place other living beings on our planet in such an awful situation, just because they aren't humans. We've come a long way as a species but we still have a ways to go as far as understanding and treating animals with the respect they so deserve. I don't wanna push my personal values on anyone but it is easier than ever to be vegetarian today. If you are going to eat meat, you may want to consider free range, where at least the animals aren't relegated to situations akin to mass death camps and the food is at least remotely healthy. As for the war, I don't support it and only hope we come to some kind of situation where people can see eye to eye. Sadly, not to sound like a downer, but we can't even respect eachother as humans, so it's looking pretty grim for the so-called "lesser beasts". Peace all.
So my friend went deer hunting last fall and downed a big doe. He called me up to help drag it out, skin, and butcher it; lots of work but it's worth it (to some people) in the end. One thing I remember him saying, "Ya know everyone loves deer meat, but not everyone knows the work and process that goes with it." This picture kinnda reminds me of the same idea-- also in relation to war.
War is never a "good thing" in the inital sense of it. It's never pretty. Bringing me to one of more favored quotes:
"It is hardship and work, that brings temperment. But through this, truly amazing things can happen." -Anonymous
This makes me kind of disgusted to be a meat-eater, what with seeing all the carcasses piled up like that and no regard for the animal that gave its life to feed me.
i LOVE IT! Don't want to get to politcal but I was in the Marines and I did not really understand this war.Don't get it confused, there is a difference in backing your troops vs backing the man who called this into action.
hmmm...we can chose whether or not we want to eat this kind of food, but we don't have anywhere near the amount of choice when it comes to war. what a tgreat thought provoking pic!
We have exactly the same amount of choice with respect to the very narrow point that i made. *if* you eat meat then you are participating in something. It is incumbent on you to acquaint yourself with just what you are participating in even if, especially if, it is ugly. Similarly, *if* you support and agree with a war, then it is incumbent on you to acquaint yourself with all of it's innocent victims--especially those on the other side.
In both cases we have the choice to do this acquainting, or to proceed on our path in ignorance. I simply say that we ought to do the prior.
I spoke not of supporting troops or not supporting them. i spoke not of eating meat nor not eating meat. I happen to eat meat. And i hate this fact. And as hard as it is to look at images such as that which is posted, i know that i ought to. i ought to because i am participating in it.
I like that photo. Don't find it disgusting though I don't eat pork anymore. But as a buddhist, I think those animals died for a cause. Feeding humanity. And as I am sure they have kinda soul, I have a good thought for all animals that serve humanity in that way. War is another thing..... People don't always die for a good cause when they die at war... Have a good thankful thought for any animal you eat. And pray for all those who are at war.
There is not a man woman or child on earth that is not in some way a participant in that "war". And in that sense, they are no American bullets, they are everyone's bullets. This is true if you support what is happening, or oppose what is happening.

I don't approve of any war. In case I wasn't heard.
war is NOT pretty on either side.
and I think of becoming vegetarian when I see things like this.
and it amazes me, chris, that you would write such words knowing that I am in fact married to an american soldier.
Ughh.

A little story for thought.
