Any salamanders?
Well, Josie, I suppose if I did a bit of poking around I probably could find a few salamanders -- and in the vicinity of Devil's Creek I would guess that they all wear horns...
Actually, the creeks have turned into nurserys for the newly hatched Coho Salmon and Steelhead Trout... They all look happy...
brrr, why the name devilscreek it must have a story
You know, I've also been wondering why that creek ended up with the name of the Devil... I think the place is more like heaven than hell... But actually, here in California we have dozens of places that have been named in honor of the devil... Devil's Slide is south of San Francisco on Highway 1, Devil's Postpile is an unusual formation of basalt rock in the Sierra Nevada mountains, and the Devil's Golfcourse is a flat and rocky area in Death Valley... I'm sure I could come up with several more...
But I still haven't been able to locate the reason why this creek ended up with the name -- I'll have to do some more checking -- but I did run across this:
"Place names evoking the Devil reflect a dominant attitude on the part of Euro-American settlers towards the New World during the migration into the wild West. The history of place names is based in mistranslation, deliberate insult and slur and the frustration of ranchers, as well as a Christian notion of the wilderness as the domain of the Devil."
thankyou for your story Donald.
The historystory is very interesting.
