You know, the theme of surfer vs. hippy got me to wondering about the differences between the two "groups"... I tried to Google the subject, but couldn't find anything -- but I posed the question on craigslist.org and got this response: ---------------------------- Hippies had long hair and were political and anti-establishment.
Surfers were clean-cut with short hair and not very heavy into politics (and typically from a more upscale background).
Hippies tended to be very serious and liked obtuse surreal music that went on for a long time, like the Beatles albums that aren't broken up into separate songs. The better to trip to.
Surfers liked catchy three minute songs. No need to trip while surfing unless you want to face plant in the coral.
The surfer fad was right before the hippies. Hippies also didn't get along with the disco fad that came right after they fell out of vogue. ---------------------
