The whole time I lived in Germany, I never saw one. I kind of got the impression they were all exported to the United Stated in the 60's and early 70's.
I, the photographer of this image, have - at least and although it's a while since October - a few words to say to this image:
It was taken during a VW Van Gahering in Hannover (in Germany), it was a celebration of the T1 bullie which got 60 years old. The reason why you won't see any of these on motorways in Germany is simple; they are oldtimers, nearly driving not fast enough to permitted on german motorways AND (a more important fact) Germans are a bit fussy about things they really like; they would rather put this neat vans in a deep, dark garage than drive them around.
