You know, out here in California a lot of our freeways are lined with this stuff, and the little town where I grew up, Pacific Grove (next to Carmel and Monterey) has a large portion of it's waterfront planted with a smaller variety, but just as colorful. One man, a Mr. Berwick, with the help of some Boy Scouts started planting it way back in the '40's. The tourists love it and the "locals" pretty much take it for granted.
I found this yesterday growing at China Camp, about 20 miles north of San Francisco.
